Innovation and Disruption

Which are the products shaking up their fields most dramatically? I’m pretty sure that we won’t see another ocean-boiling new kind of device on September 2018.

We see lots of people writing “Apple is no longer innovative”. But there are some things that aren’t as easy as they look like. In my opinion the term is much too often used as a catchword without referring to its true meaning.

“People are sometimes confused about the difference between innovation and disruption. It’s not exactly black and white, but there are real distinctions, and it’s not just splitting hairs. Think of it this way: Disruptors are innovators, but not all innovators are disruptors – in the same way that a square is a rectangle but not all rectangles are squares.

Innovation and disruption are similar in that they are both makers and builders. Disruption takes a left turn by literally uprooting and changing how we think, behave, do business, learn and go about our day-to-day. Harvard Business School professor and disruption guru Clayton Christensen says that a disruption displaces an existing market or technology and produces something new and more efficient and worthwhile. It is at once destructive and creative.”

The first iPhone and the first iPad are shining examples of high level innovation and disruption, ocean boiling kind of devices whereas follow-ups could be described with the words of Apple’s CEO Tim Cook:

Some people see innovation as change, but we have never really seen it like that. It’s making things better.

With this he is completely in line with generally accepted meanings of the term like this on Wikipedia:

“Innovation can be defined simply as a “new idea, device or method”. However, innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing market needs. Such innovation takes place through the provision of more-effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are made available to markets, governments and society. The term “INNOVATION” can be defined as something original and more effective and, as a consequence, new, that “breaks into” the market or society.”

An innovative product is only born if it provides space for essential improvements in the future. This is what Apple did regarding the aforementioned devices. The Apple Watch could also be seen as an innovative device if we look at the options which are possible in the health care sector. One day the company will build an Apple Watch that is capable of offering continuous glucose monitoring.
