Cloud Conditions Today

23 08 2017

Oh Albert, you’re always right.

“Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.”

One side of the coin is the price for cloud storages of well-known providers.

Provider . Plan . USD/y . USD for 100 GB/y

Dropbox 1000 GB 99.99 / 9.99

Google Drive 100 GB 21.99 / 21.99

Mega 200 GB 59.88 / 29.94

OneDrive 50 GB 23.88 / 47.76

Box 100 GB 79.99 / 79.99

Apple iCloud 50 GB 11.88 / 23.76

On the other side of the coin there are lots of intangible assets which have to be considered as there are:

• Security

• Encryption

• Performance

• Size of the provider’s business

• Integration within apps and OS

• Availability of powerful client apps

• Display of data in different file formats

• Sharing capabilities

• WebDAV support

• UI and UX

My suggestion …

iCloud is deeply integrated in Apple’s operating systems iOS and macOS. It makes a lot of things dead easy. So purchase a 50 GB (or more) iCloud plan if you like to use cloud services for backups, photos, iWork documents, and syncing of contacts, calendars, reminders, etc. and not to forget your free password keeper Keychain.

But preferences are different so get a free plan of the big five and try out their apps.

Furthermore – if you choose more than one provider – you’ll need a file management app which can connect to your storages to easily transfer and manage files. For me it’s File Browser that fits best.

Note

If you don’t want to pay and like to use a free plan of a provider then keep in mind that all of them have their ToS which state that your account can be suspended without notification.

Extract from Dropbox ToS as an example

“Dropbox allows you to store up to 2 GB free of charge. Dropbox reserves the right to terminate Free Accounts at any time, with or without notice. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, if a Free Account is inactive for ninety (90) days, then Dropbox may delete any or all of Your Files without providing additional notice.”

Good luck for choosing the right one.
