iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
See this concept map (created with the app INSPIRATION on an iPhone 6S Plus) which shows all iOS versions in relation to all iPhone models on which they can be installed.
It started with compatibility to 2 models. Since iOS 6 the installation on the actual model and 3 predecessors is supported. With iOS 7 and 8 Apple’s mobile OS is ready to install on 5 models. iOS 10 now supports 7 iPhone iterations and these iPad models: iPad Pro 12.9″, iPad Pro 9.7″, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4th gen, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2.
Some people argue that less fragmentation isn’t as important as Apple officials tell us on the company’s yearly events. Well, stats about iPhone device share (Localytica, 2016) tell us that usually more than 60% of iOS users are on older devices (with a higher percentage for the iPad) but like to benefit from improved OS versions. This is proofed by extremely high adoption rates (about 80%).
Alan Kay is one of the key people who have shaped the way we are using computers today. He can be seen as the key scientist behind the graphical user interface and the object-oriented programming. Regarding Apple’s success the most important thing Steve Jobs overtook from Alan Kay was the belief that
People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.
Jobs made it to one of the core principles of Apple.
Less fragmentation is just one of the benefits Apple brings to its customers and it’s possible because they build both, hardware and software. Customers love the durability of their iPhones giving them an extraordinary resale value. Beside customers thousands of happy developers can see their apps running on old iPhone young timers, a not to be underestimated economic factor.
Of course not all features of updated operating systems are available for older devices. 3D-Touch for example needed a new touch screen technology.
“There is a huge difference between market share of units and usage share. We’re about selling the best and having the best experience and having the happiest customers. Happy generally means using more.”
