Gross and Net

27 02 2015

Gross refers to the total and Net refers to the part of the total that really matters. The stats show what you can take home when buying one of these little crazy machines, aka smartphones.

The available memory for your photos, videos, and other stuff is reduced by the operating system of your device (most likely it’s Apple’s iOS or Google’s Android).

Important …

Keep an eye on your own memory, aka brain, and I do not mean the capacity which is as hard to increase as the memory of an iThing. Steve Jobs once told us …

I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. … .

To find it out, the usage of a device isn’t stringently required but it can help.

Summary …

There is no need to waste space.
It’s the pure and simple software design and the fact that Apple develops both, hard- and software, which gives you a fast running operating system not taking too much away from what you bought.

Tim Cook in Germany

26 02 2015

Designed in California and Made in Germany

The next business level

Tim Cook visited Germany and met Chancellor Angela Merkel during his Berlin visit to talk about security and privacy.

He also visited the city of Gersthofen near Augsburg where the glass for Apple’s new Campus 2 (Cupertino’s Spaceship, inspired by Steve Jobs) is produced by the German specialist SEELE. SEELE already delivered elements for the 5th Avenue New York Apple Store and many other stores in the USA, UK, China, and Germany.

Near to SEELE the Josef Gartner GmbH combines the glass with the metal frames and then ships it to Cupertino.

Germany is the mother of all mobile transportation prominently influenced by Karl Friedrich Benz, Gottlieb Daimler, and Ferdinand Porsche.

Is Apple really working on a car?

Some publishing media predict this.

Did Tim also visit Porsche’s HQ in Stuttgart in a secret mission?

Well, I don’t know it but he should go there because both companies and their early leaders have many things in common, the business strategy and some kind of DNA which is exemplary for a tremendous brand loyalty.

About a lucky man

16 02 2015

This is the story about a lucky man who did the right thing at the right time:

In 1985 Apple had a promotion called Test Drive where you could borrow a Mac for the weekend from your local computer reseller. At the same time they had a sales contest for reseller sales people. I had just finished my undergraduate degree (Animal Science/Microbiology) and needed to make some money for grad school, so I went to work for a local computer reseller in Ames, Iowa (I was always the computer guy in the lab).

At the end of the sales contest I got a letter from Apple (I knew it was legit because it was done on a yet to be shipped LaserWriter) saying that I’d won and was invited to Cupertino (my first trip to California).

There were other winners from other regions (but I sold the most) and I got to have dinner with Steve and Mike Murray (VP of Marketing). As a guy that had been playing with Apple II’s since 1978, it was more than a dream come true. I was 24 years old, having dinner with Steve Jobs. I personally understand the term “reality distortion field”. I also spent the week with other sales and marketing execs at Apple in interviews, a tour of the factory and meetings at headquarters.

Steve gave me the keys to a Porsche 944 and then about 3 months later, Apple called back to see if I would consider moving to California and work at headquarters. I stayed for 10 years. After my second sabbatical, I helped found a new networking and communications company called Packeteer as CEO, took it public in 1999 and retired in 2002 at 41.

Lots of people can rightfully say that Steve Jobs changed their life.

… and me too after reading Steve’s commencement address at Stanford University and learning more about his life, his beliefs, and the company’s DNA which is still visible.

Summary …

That’s life.

Activation Lock Status

10 02 2015

In November 2014 Apple added a new tool to further increase the security of iOS devices. It’s called ACTIVATION LOCK STATUS.

Activation Lock is turned on by default since the launch of iOS 7 and with iOS 8 it comes together with a new feature called Send Last Location (Settings – iCloud – Find My iPhone – Send Last Location) which transmits the last known location of an iOS device before the internet connection is cut off or the battery is empty.

Apple’s Craig Federighi (CEO Software Development) …

We think this is going to be a really powerful theft deterrent.

Apple on it’s website …

Losing your iPhone feels lousy. Thankfully, Find My iPhone can help you get it back. But if it looks like that’s not going to happen, new security features in iOS 7 make it harder for anyone who’s not you to use or sell your device. Now turning off Find My iPhone or erasing your device requires your Apple ID and password. Find My iPhone can also continue to display a custom message, even after your device is erased. And your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can reactivate it. Which means your iPhone is still your iPhone. No matter where it is.

Many users, once they find out that their iOS device has been stolen, completely erase it from iCloud or another iOS device with Find My iPhone installed. Erasing of a device is followed by Activation. This feature forces users to enter the Apple ID and password associated with that device to regain access.

The new web-based tool allows you to check whether a device is currently locked for activation or not. To use the tool, users are asked to enter an iOS device’s IMEI or Serial Number, which is then cross-checked with Apple’s internal database to ensure that Activation Lock is not currently turned on for that device.

Summary …

Activation Lock Status is a further sophisticated step to secure your Apple device.

Status Report

4 02 2015

Apple is a processor driven company.

The well-known abbreviation CPU which means Central Processing Unit in this case turns into Cupertino Processing Unit when looking on the leaders. Beside some iOS and OSX updates Apple also released a couple of human updates last year.

Responsibilities of Peter Oppenheimer, Chief Financial Officer, moved over to Luca Maestri. Within the CPU he now is the responsible Floating Point Unit.

Angela Ahrendts is the second new face joining the executive board in 2014. Sadly Lisa P. Jackson, Vice President for Environmental Initiatives, still isn’t part of the Executive board.

The Beatles …

CUPERTINO, California, May 28, 2014

“Apple today announced it has agreed to acquire the critically acclaimed subscription streaming music service Beats Music, and Beats Electronic, which makes the popular Beats headphones, speakers and audio software. As part of the acquisition, Beats co-founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre will join Apple.”

Eddy Cue

“Music is such an important part of Apple’s DNA and always will be.
The addition of Beats will make our music lineup even better, from free streaming with iTunes Radio to a world-class subscription service in Beats, and of course buying music from the iTunes Store as customers have loved to do for years.”

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine joined Apple but nobody knows what their duties are.

And now, wow …

The Q1 results (Oct-Dec 2014, fiscal year ends September 30) of the company surpassed those of all times and all other companies in the world.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus primarily made this possible.

Cook already predicted the mother of all upgrades shortly after the iPhone event in September 2014. This is particularly true in China, where Apple reportedly sold more smartphones in the country than any other company in the last quarter.

It looks like Apple will be able to sustain this amazing growth.

“We certainly believe there are legs to it.”

Tim Cook said.

It’s widely expected that there are also delightful updates of the product line-up this year starting in April with the Apple Watch.

In September 2014 Apple won the Coolest Brand Award in the UK for the third consecutive year with Aston Martin and Nike in 2nd and 3rd place.

What makes this company successful?
